As a consequence of the various COVID-19 response programs that have been implemented by the Government of Canada and the trend towards having more employees work from home the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has implemented new and additional reporting requirements for 2020.

COVID-19 Update - Changes to Federal and Provincial Programs

On October 9, 2020, the Government of Canada announced new and extended programs aimed at helping businesses with reduced revenues and increased costs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic operate through the end of 2020 and first half of 2021.

On November 10, 2020, the Government of Manitoba announced new provincial programs and alterations to existing programs.

We will post another article tomorrow which will include new reporting requirements that will impact all organizations that incur payroll costs. 

COVID-19 Update - Personal Benefits

OCTOBER 30, 2020

New legislation enabling the Government of Canada to support Canadian workers through the next phase of the recovery from COVID-19, and to avoid a gap in coverage after they have received their last Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) payments was passed under the COVID-19 Response Measures Act on October 2, 2020.

The Act creates three new temporary Canada Recovery Benefits to provide income support to Canadian workers while promoting economic recovery with measures that encourage people to return to work.

Update Regarding Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy

On July 17, 2020, the Government of Canada issued their DRAFT legislation to extend The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (“CEWS”) until December 19, 2020. The details of the program have only been released up to November 21, 2020. Prior to the extension, the government subsidized eligible employers up to 75% of employee wages if revenues declined by 30% or more.
